According to Britannica, in Hebrew, Elias means “Yahweh is my God” or “my God is Yahweh.” The English-language encyclopedia reports that Elias was a prophet whose legacy, along with Moses, was saving the religion of Yahweh (Judaism) from corruption by the “worship of Baal,” an ancient Phonecian god.

Elias is an English or Biblical version of the name Elijah, so it has taken different spellings. Other variations of the name include Elia and Eliyyahu in Hebrew.

An important part of learning about a person’s history is getting certain things right, like correctly pronouncing their name. With its three-syllable pronunciation, Elias is a simple name to say.


To start, think of the sound “EH” when pronouncing the first syllable. Then “lee” as the middle syllable. Lastly, emphasize “AHS” when enunciating the name’s final syllable (as one would when saying names like James or Jones).

Elias is mentioned in several religious texts, including the first and second Books of Kings. The origins of Elias can be traced to the United Kingdom and Germany, where the surname was first found in Scotland in 1180.

Prominent figures with the name Elias

Walter Elias Disney (more commonly known as Walt Disney) made significant contributions to American culture before he died in Los Angeles in 1966. An entrepreneur and pioneer of animated cartoon films, Disney famously planned and built Disneyland, which opened in LA in 1955.

Another bearer of this name is Norbert Elias, a sociologist from Germany whose most important work is the 1939 book “The Civilizing Process: The History of Manners.”

Patrik Eliáš played 20 seasons in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils, and won the Stanley Cup in 2000 and 2003. He holds the franchise records for most game-winning goals and points in a single season.
